Using µTorrent @ Work

I thought I’d share some experience on how to hide uTorrent from those conniving little work sysadmins!

Lets first remove uTorrent from the Add/Remove programs list
1. Download CCleaner: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
2. Open up CCleaner, then click on tools. You will be presented with a “programs to remove” list. These are all of the programs which you have installed. Click on “uTorrent” and click “Delete Entry”.

Hide uTorrent in the “Windows” folder
1. Go to the directory where uTorrent is installed, cut and paste uTorrent into your “Windows” directory or any of its subfolders.
2. Now lets delete the empty uTorrent folder.

Rename uTorrent so thats its harder to recognise as a processes
1. Go to where you moved uTorrent and select the file.
2. There are many different legitimate windows processes open at one time, but one of the most abundant in Windows XP is “svchost”, there are usually about 6 or more of these things running at once, perfect camoflage!
3. Press F2 on your keyboard, this is the windows shortcut to rename. Rename it to “svcost” without the quotation marks

Create a shortcut
1. Right click on uTorrent and go to send to>desktop (create as shortcut).
2. Rename it “U”.
3. Right click, then go to properties and click “Change icon”.
4. If you go to your windows directory, there should be some pretty bland looking icons for applications, we will use the one which looks like a white box with a blue border, this is the icon used for shortcuts with missing icons which will be perfect!
5. Move the shortcut to wherever you like, but make sure it remains hidden somewhere.

Create a Boss Key
This will allow us to use a simple key to hide uTorrent completely from the system and taskbar:
1. Go to uTorrent
2. Click on Edit > Preferences
3. You should be under “General”
4. We will be using the tilde key, which as far as I know is a key nobody uses for anything except playing Quake Next to the words “Boss-Key” click in the window and press tilde (thats the button to the left of the number 1 on the keyboard)
5. It should assign a bosskey as Alt and tilde which means you just have to press Alt and tilde to hide uTorrent from prying eyes!

Minimize uTorrent’s signature
1. under UI settings, make sure you have the following:
Close to tray selected
always show tray icon selected
Show Balloon notifications in tray deselected
Minimize to tray selected

Enable Encryption
1. Go into uTorrent
2. Click options > preferences
3. Now click on “Bittorrent”
4. Under protocol encryption, next to outgoing, click “forced”. This should hide uTorrent from any proxy servers or ISP throttling.

And remember, leech from work the smart way!:thumbsup:
